The Federal System

Introduction
Under the Articles of Confederation, the state government had more power than the national government. The National Government barely had any power, and it had to beg the states to be able to pass any legislation. States never co-operated with each other, they formed their own laws, created their own currency, and completely governed themselves. The founding fathers wanted a strong national government, that would be able to pass legislation that would mutually benefit the entire nation, yet at the same time have government where states could pass their own laws and make their own decisions.

The Central Government
After not having success with the articles of confederation there needed to be a central government. The Federal system was established and created. This allowed the states and its people to have their own rights and it allowed the state government to pass its own local laws that apply to their state. The Federal government would have the power to pass laws that would apply to all states. The Federal do government could do much more than the state government. The Federal government could declare war; start an arm or navy, run post offices, and print money, and also regulate trade. By having a federal government there would be a central control over all states but it would not take away the right of each individual state.

The State government
The state government has lots of power. It can create and enforce state laws. It can build schools, and other public places. It can establish local governments within the state. It can conduct elections for electing the state's senators and representatives.
